How Turmeric Can Help Alleviate Arthritis Pain

Turmeric is a yellow spice that is made from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. An antioxidant compound in turmeric, known as curcumin, is said to help fight inflammation. Some research suggests that it may also be helpful in improving symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Turmeric and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to mistakenly attack the joints causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. The condition can also affect other parts of the body.

In one study, people with rheumatoid arthritis took either curcumin, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug known as diclofenac sodium, or a combination of both1. At the end of the study, the group taking curcumin showed the greatest improvement in symptoms.

Turmeric and Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is a condition that leads to the breakdown of joint cartilage and bone. In one study, people with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis of the knee took either a curcumin supplement with piperine (compound in black pepper known to increase curcumin’s absorption) or a placebo for six weeks2. At the end of the study, the patients showed significant improvements in their pain levels and physical function.

In another study, patients with osteoarthritis of the knee received either a turmeric extract or ibuprofen once daily for four weeks3. The turmeric extract was found to be just as effective as ibuprofen. Another takeaway is that the number of patients that experienced abdominal pain or discomfort was higher in those taking ibuprofen compared to those taking the turmeric extract. This is because NSAIDs such as ibuprofen may cause ulcers, bleeding, or holes in the stomach or intestine.

NATURELO’s Organic Turmeric Powder and Ginger Extract contains Bioperine which has been found to improve the bioavailability of curcumin. Our Organic Turmeric supplement with Ginger and BioPerine may provide as much as 2000x better absorption than consuming turmeric alone.
